NdFeB magnet:  
Permanent magnets are materials where the magnetic field is generated by the internal structure
of the material itself. Inside atoms and crystals you have both electrons and the nucleus of the
atom. Both the nucleus and the electrons themselves act like little magnets, like little spinning
chunks of electric charge, and they have magnetic fields inherent in the particles themselves. 
There's also a magnetic field that's generated by the orbits of the electrons as they move about
the nucleus. So the magnetic fields of permanent magnets are the sums of the nuclear spins,
the electron spins and the orbits of the electrons themselves.  Permanent magnets are limited
by the structure of the material. And the strongest magnetic field of a permanent magnet is
about 8,000 gauss. The strongest magnets here at the Magnet Lab are 450,000 gauss, which
would be almost 50 times stronger than that.

The production process
Neodymium magnets are actually composed of neodymium, iron and boron (they are also
referred to as NIB or NdFeB magnets).  The powdered mixture is pressed under great pressure
into molds.  The material is then sintered (heated under a vacuum), cooled, and then ground or
sliced into the desired shape.  Coatings are then applied if required.  Finally, the blank magnets
are magnetized by exposing them to a very powerful magnetic field in excess of 30 KOe.

Coatings
Neodymium magnets are a composition of mostly Neodymium, Iron and Boron. If left exposed
to the elements, the iron in the magnet will rust. To protect the magnet from corrosion and to
strengthen the brittle magnet material, it is usually preferable for the magnet to be coated.
There are a variety of options for coatings, but nickel is the most common and usually preferred.
Our nickel plated magnets are actually triple plated with layers of nickel, copper, and nickel
again. This triple coating makes our magnets much more durable than the more common single
nickel plated magnets. Some other options for coating are zinc, tin, copper, epoxy, silver and
gold. Our gold plated magnets are actually quadruple plated with nickel, copper, nickel and a top
coating of gold.

Caution:
Neodymium magnets can be dangerous, as they generate extremely strong pull forces,
therefore must be handled with care to avoid personal injury and damage to the magnets.
Fingers and other body parts can get severely pinched between two attracting magnets. 
Neodymium magnets are brittle, and can shatter if allowed to slam together, launching
small pieces at great speeds. Eye protection should be worn when handling there magnets.
