NdFeB magnet:
A permanent magnet is an object made from a material that is magnetized and creates its
own persistent magnetic field. These include the elements iron, nickel and cobalt, some alloys
of rare-earth metals, and some naturally occurring minerals such as lodestone. Although
ferromagnetic (and ferrimagnetic) materials are the only ones attracted to a magnet strongly
enough to be commonly considered magnetic, all other substances respond weakly to a
magnetic field, by one of several other types of magnetism.
The production process:
Neodymium magnets are actually composed of neodymium, iron and boron (they are also
referred to as NIB or NdFeB magnets). The powdered mixture is pressed under great
pressure into molds. The material is then sintered (heated under a vacuum), cooled, and
then ground or sliced into the desired shape. Coatings are then applied if required. Finally,
the blank magnets are magnetized by exposing them to a very powerful magnetic field in
excess of 30 KOe.

Grades of Neodymium
As a very general rule, the higher the grade (the number following the 'N'), the stronger the
magnet. The highest grade of neodymium magnet currently available is N52. Any letter
following the grade refers to the temperature rating of the magnet. If there are no letters
following the grade, then the magnet is standard temperature neodymium.
Platings/Coatings
Neodymium magnets are a composition of mostly Neodymium, Iron and Boron. If left
exposed to the elements, the iron in the magnet will rust. To protect the magnet from
corrosion and to strengthen the brittle magnet material, it is usually preferable for the
magnet to be coated. There are a variety of options for coatings, but nickel is the most
common and usually preferred. Our nickel plated magnets are actually triple plated with
layers of nickel, copper, and nickel again.

Caution:
Neodymium magnets can be dangerous, as they generate extremely strong pull forces,
therefore must be handled with care to avoid personal injury and damage to the magnets.
Fingers and other body parts can get severely pinched between two attracting magnets.
Neodymium magnets are brittle, and can shatter if allowed to slam together, launching
small pieces at great speeds. Eye protection should be worn when handling there magnets.
